The rumours circulating that the 2023 met gala theme was going to be space-themed turned out to be just rumours. On September 30th, the Met Gala theme for 2023 was announced to be paying tribute to the work of Karl Lagerfeld, the past creative director of Chanel, who passed away in 2019.
The gala will coincide with an exhibit dedicated to his work from the 50s until his death and will feature 150 pieces along with original sketches, primarily Chanel (Vogue).
This dedication does not come as a surprise due to his prominence in the fashion industry and close friendship with Anna Wintour. However, because of the controversial things he has said in his lifetime, such as describing Adele as “a little too fat” and, in 2017, he revoked the Holocaust to criticize German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her open-door policy toward refugees fleeing conflict (The Cut). Many people in the media believe that Virgil Abloh, Issey Miyake, or Thierry Mugler would have been much better designers to honour.
Due to the lack of consistency among attendees of the Met Gala and their dedication to the theme, the bonus of this theme is that it is challenging to get it wrong. While Lagerfeld is most recognized for his namesake brand and work at Chanel, he also designed for Jean Patou, Fendi, and Chloe. Although creativity is limited, and there is not much flexibility with what one can take from the theme, it may create a more consistent red carpet.
The go-to attendees I’ll be expecting for this Met Gala will be the girls commonly paired with Chanel: Cara Delevigne, Kristen Stewart, and also Dakota Johnson. I believe Lily-Rose Depp and Margot Robbie are perfect for this theme. Gigi and Bella Hadid have also been spotted with Karl Lagerfeld many times before, so I am confident that they will be able to honour him well for this theme.
