Collina Strada is a fashion label created by Hillary Taymour and uses fashion to comment on political, environmental, and social issues. She is known for her eco-friendly focus and unconventional show practices. Her runway at this year’s New York Fashion Week did not disappoint.
Strada’s runway show, “Please Don’t Eat my Friends” took place in the House of Cannabis in Soho, New York. This theme of animorphism comes from Strada’s desire to show our “primal truths”' as Taymour believes everyone has an inner show pony [who is playful, bold] and an inner workhorse [dependable, reliable, practical]. Especially in the fashion industry, which is often criticized for being “too serious,” Strada’s show can be seen as refreshing and unique. Or, on the other hand, as just bizarre.
The models wore animal-esque prosthetics made by extremely talented Makeup Artist, Isamaya Ffrench. Meticulously detailed, these masks, ears, and hair pieces were the surreal final touch to complete the outfit. The models helped make the show immersive by walking in a way that resembled whichever animal they dressed up as. Some models also carried props, such as a stack of hay or a real Pomeranian dog. The soundtrack of the show also featured animal noises, like barking and roaring.
Taymour ended the show by coming out herself, with animal ears. The aesthetic of the show gave, fantasy, ethereal, Animal Farm with Lord of the Rings, all in one. It was a lot to take in, but definitely avant-garde. You either absolutely loved it, or absolutely hated it.
