The Rise of “BarbieCore”

By: Julianna Tramposch

Following the release of the trailer for Greta Gerwig’s newest movie, Barbie, there has been a new fashion trend on the rise known as the “BarbieCore'' aesthetic. The Barbie aesthetic includes everything pink, from pink gingham dresses to pink fluffy mules. The three acceptable “barbie pinks” are hot pink, bubble gum pink, and fuschia. There is a special emphasis on Hot Pink, and it is undoubtedly becoming the most fashionable color of the year. According to BusinessInsider, the trend of BarbieCore has surpassed 560 million views on TikTok. Barbie stars Margot Robbie as Barbie, and Ryan Gosling as Ken. It is set to premiere in theaters this summer on July 23, 2023. This movie marks the 60th anniversary of the famous blonde Barbie doll.

The rise of the color pink started in 2022 with the Fall Valentino Runway Show, showcasing the iconic “Valentino Pink PP” which is named after Valentino’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli. Since then, celebrities have elevated the BarbieCore trend even further. Nicky Minaj refers to her fans as “Barbz,” and Lizzo, Megan Fox, Anne Hathaway, and Kim Kardashian have all been spotted walking the runway in gorgeous, hot pink dresses. The hotter the pink, the better. BarbieCore, at its core, is about confidently embracing vibrant hues. BarbieCore has a tie to the 80s style with a carefree and unapologetic motif. Because of this, BarbieCore is becoming the “it” style for summer 2023. BarbieCore is becoming the ultimate symbol of femininity and female power.
